Wednesday, September 08, 2010 - Surprisingly good. I was expecting less. An old-world style, but with some panache and even a wee fruit in there. High good (84.5).
Wednesday, September 08, 2010 - Very nice wine al though not my typical choice. Lots of dark fruit and christmas sprices in the nose. Fairly warm and massive fruit but impeccable balance over all, and ok lenght. Still tanins left and I think this wine will easily live another 5 years time. Great QPR.
Friday, September 03, 2010 - Not as impressive as the previous Zenato Ripassa I had. Not sure if this bottle was a little off, or was the wrong selection of food to go with the wine. Anyway, wine showed too much hit and was clearly off balance. After 30 minutes it did improve, but wasn't the same as before. Stil very good, especially considering its price range.
Thursday, September 02, 2010 - Nice dark hue. Dark fruit, cinnamon and spice on nose. Medium to full body. Wonderful boysenberry and dark fruit taste with plenty of spiciness. Smooth and well integrated. Perfect tannin structure and enough acid to balance the fruit. Good long finish. I really like this wine.
Thursday, August 26, 2010 - Overall this is an easy drinking sweet dark fruit dominated wine on both the nose and palate, with a very soft mouth feel that leaves a pleasant lingering sweet inkiness on the palate. Medium nose of primarily black raspberry jam with tones of ink. Taste of ripe black fruit, pencil lead, ink well and soft tannins.
Saturday, August 21, 2010 - Not sure when i purchased this. This is pretty unusual in that it is really dark and concentrated. More like a Malbec from Argentina than a Valpoly, even a ripasso one. Nice acidty, soft tannins, but comes across a little too sweet and international in style rather than the more bracing earthy Italian style I prefer. Still a tasty wine, that went pretty well with some homemade pesto and linguine.
Tuesday, July 20, 2010 - Black olives. Black fruits. Great depth. Rich without being heavy. Secondary flavors of cinnamon, mint and tobacco. Great complexity. Much better than the first bottle.
Thursday, July 01, 2010 - From 375. Not what I remember... and not that impressed. Popped and poured. Raisin, plum and leather. A lot of raisin. Seemed "ordinary". I had this at a restaurant about a year ago and remember being blown away (hence why I went out a bought some). This was NOT that experience. Very good
Tuesday, June 22, 2010 - Excellent. From a 375. Spicy nose of plum and raisined red fruit with a little bit of leather. After time, the palate took on a little animal funk after and was dominated by black cherries. Pretty smooth wine. Wish I had more.
Saturday, June 12, 2010 - almost black with orange reflexes, aroma of plum, brambleberry, raisins, taste unbalanced with alcohol and acidity. nice slight bitterness, medium finish, aftertaste of raisins (typical ripasso). perhaps this can come more together with further cellaring.
Sunday, June 06, 2010 - This wine is always consistent and and a real nice match with food. Paired with grilled lamb and the cherry flavors really came forward. Soft not overpowering but with a smooth silky finish.
Friday, May 21, 2010 - No idea where this wine came from or how it got into my cellar but I was very happy that it was there. Not very familiar with this varietal but it was very balanced with a bit of fruit at first with some leather at the end. Paired excellently with a four-cheese pizza.
Saturday, April 10, 2010 - A dark ruby/garnet in the glass, the nose was quite similar to Hall's cherry cough drops, with a little funk thrown in. On the palate, noticeable residual sugar, with a hint of dried fruits, along with cherries and licorice. Very ripe, and there was not the acidity to make this 'pop', nor much leather or tar. I quite prefer Chianti over this, though an excellent Ripassa is always a nice treat.
Wednesday, March 31, 2010 - From 375, a gift from Steve. Pop & pour, consumed with italian cheese bread appetizer. Lots of earthy cherry fruit, with a bit of mineral and a nice vanilla finish. Wish it had been a full bottle!
Sunday, March 21, 2010 - Ripe and round. Excellent Valpolicella with a fruity bouquet and a touch of Veneto earth. Raspberries and strawberry on the nose and palate;drinks very nicely ans is always and enjoyable quaff. Consistent with previous notes on several bottles.
Wednesday, March 03, 2010 - Excellent. I loved it. Medium bodied, cherry, oak and notes of vanilla. We enjoyed with duck confit pasta. Highly recommend.
The wine looks Tawny colored. The legs are Medium. It smells like and Raisin. The body is Medium/Full. The wine is textured Satin-like. The wine finishes Medium.
Friday, February 26, 2010 - Plum, Cherries, dr. pepper, vanilla and stone. Quite nice, but wanted a little more acidity as it drank just a tad rich for my taste. Good balance and a mid-length finish. Felt a little pricey to me at $30, so not sure I would buy again.
Sunday, February 07, 2010 - Pretty nice wine. Had this with fried chicken, homemade mashed potatoes, homemade gravy, and green beans...complemented the meal well with an earthy spice structure. I will certainly buy this again.
Thursday, February 04, 2010 - The most modern of the Ripasso bloc, aside from Allegrini's Palazzo Della Torre which eschews molinara and therefore bears no DOC. Aromas are fresh, showing violet, plum, wet stone, dried fruit and herb. Fair amount of oak on the palate, a very polished style with flavors of plum and wet stone highlighted by dried fruit, spice and tobacco. Finishes long and possibly the most authentic aspect of the wine, with ample bitter amaro notes mixing with pliant but assertive tannin.
Wednesday, January 27, 2010 - Earthiness, not too sweet, dark fruit blackberry and currant. Hot alcohol. Light but long finish. Good value for this wine. Anxious to try some in a year after things settle down a bit. Still tight.
Monday, January 25, 2010 - Really nice wine with great hints of plum and cherry on the nose. The taste was very well balanced between the fruits and tannis. Had a lot of alcohol but was smooth on the finish. Really enjoyed the wine and so did everyone else at the table.
Monday, January 18, 2010 - Popped and poured. Concentrated cherry red. Closed nose that opened up after a while in the glass. Ripe red fruit, licorice, black pepper and dark chocolate. The alcohol is clearly present. Cherries on the palate with good acidity, but the tannins are a bit harsh, I think. Give it some more time or decant!
Friday, January 15, 2010 - I now understand the "baby Amarone" description. Nice ripe fruit, hint of prunes, but without the depth and length you get in an Amarone. Decent wine, but not very impressed with the QPR for $30.
Saturday, January 09, 2010 - Similar to my note from one year ago, but I didn't find it as interesting with some of its youth shed. Still with ample fleshy blue and black fruits and some spice, but lacking the underlying mineral and verve I seem to remember.
Monday, January 04, 2010 - Good example of a Ripassa. Very approachable food friendly wine. Cherry and floral scents in the nose. Nicely integrated cherry and plum flavors with a bit of sweet spice flavor. Smooth medium bodied with a nice finish.
Sunday, January 03, 2010 - Lots and lots of fruit... this wine is rich with and will fill your whole mounth. Great smell of red berries and i believe some banana cake... never wrote banana cake for a tasting note in my life! Long finish with well integrated wood. This is a must buy wine for Amarone, Primitivo, Zinfandel and Shiraz lovers.
Saturday, December 19, 2009 - Amazing wine! Had this at Le Zie restaurant in New York city. I was looking for an Amarone in a 1/2 bottle format and this was the closest I could get. It drinks just like an Amarone and alcohol content is in check. Fruit forward with some light spiciness into it. Light finish. Impressive for the price (USD 31 for the 1/2 bottle on this restaurant).
Tuesday, November 17, 2009 - I guess I'm not overly sensitive to cork taint because I can never tell until the 2nd day. But this one was clearly corked, even to me, on day 2. Bummer.......
Friday, October 30, 2009 - Deep thick ruby red color. Cinnamon, plum, caramel, and earth scent. Rich, mouth-filling, cherry and chocolate flavors with ample fine tannins and a long finish.
Tuesday, September 22, 2009 - Pleasant enough, but not very interesting. Medium weight, dark, soft and smooth. Not particularly interesting flavor profile.
Friday, September 11, 2009 - Piercing bright red mixed with darker purple hues in the glas. Nice, almost floral on the nose. Medium to full body on the paplate with bright berries that light up the mouth with almost laser like focus. No jamminess, but lots of goodness. It drinks very young, but i like where tihs is going.
Sunday, August 30, 2009 - Decanted and the wine just got bigger, Aroma of Rubber, Chinese Restaurant Sweet n Sour. Taste: Good intial oak sweetness not over done but good, big big body 1.5 dimensional. A Solid wine a Italian wine has those characteristic Day 2: Man this wine is big, lots of Acid, and Fine Gritty Tannins will last for awhile Solid works good with a nice Milk cheese aged, definitly need some food with this, did taste good with dinner
Monday, August 24, 2009 - Hoped this would be more like a baby amarone. Stone/mineral on the slight nose. Palate dark cherry/berry. Finish some prune, fig and berry. I'm note sure what to do with this. Not a bad drink but not serious. Would time help? RP 93...don't get it.
Wednesday, August 05, 2009 - Very concentrated, dark jammylike fruit/cherries.Rather onedimensional, though an easy quaffer. It pleases more after the first glass, but becomes later on almost sickly-sweet on the palate.Like drinking half a bottle of a ruby porto...
Tuesday, June 30, 2009 - A very muted nose, though effort will yield berry, date, a touch of cream and a blast of vanilla. Medium bodied on the palate, sometimes almost watery, but with balanced tannins and acidity. I’m not getting any of the jamminess that several reviewers mention, though there is dark fruit, especially blackberry, fig, and prune with a hint of thin latte. Make no mistake, this is a very enjoyable wine, but I was expecting something bigger and bolder.
Thursday, June 25, 2009 - Not a lot of nose, but a little plum/prune and dark berries. Primarily boysenberry with some blackberry/blueberry on the palate with vanilla on the finish. Very smooth and balanced.
Saturday, June 20, 2009 - Shared a bottle at dinner. Jammy, fruit-forward wine that tastes very new world. Nose had vanilla and dark berries. Taste was similar with a rich, fruity finish. A very nice wine that was soft and approachable right after popping the cork.
Friday, June 19, 2009 - Thick deep purple. Rich nose of dried cherries, raisins, dark fruit and hints of cocoa. Mouth was very rich also with spicy raspberry liqueur flavors. A nice mineral aspect to it also. Good balance.
Thursday, June 18, 2009 - Nose: Dark fruits abound with some floral hints. Palate: The dark fruits showing with tannins that soften with air. From a previous tasting (and the differing notes of other reviewers) this appears to be a tale of two wines. At the tasting this was more floral and delicate; where this bottle is dark, massive and brooding. While both interpretations are pleasing one can't help wondering about the radical style variance (perhaps a blending/bottling issue?).
Friday, June 05, 2009 - The nose is quite floral (lilacs and violets) with subtle red berry notes. This one actually is at peak (or even a little past peak) maturity, so drink up. It's really smooth with more berries and a touch of vanilla. Good wine but nothing to write home about. will not buy again at this price ($25)
Thursday, May 21, 2009 - A: Velvety dense and dark, color of the drapes from the Black Lodge of Twin Peaks. N: Coco bacon - fired meats. Sugary goodness mushroom cheese quiche or soup. Sherry cream puff pastry. Smells like a meal and desert all in one. T: Syrup bitter and delectable. Sweet velvety goodness (again) Late summer berries in wood. F: Short but yummy. Overall: Ripasso is always so good. V: 3/5
Sunday, April 19, 2009 - dark ruby yet crystal clear. enticingly complex floral and fruit aromas. elegant, refined and concentrated. long finish with some bitterness late on. needs to breathe for days. this baby-amarone is a steal at $23.
Saturday, April 18, 2009 - Dark cherry in the glass, with a weak-ish nose. Pleasant feel on the mouth, but very simple and quick on the tongue. Hope is that it gains complexity and depth over time or decanted.
Sunday, April 12, 2009 - Very smooth, rather light in fact and quite fragrant. I expected it to be more full bodied, but it was a nice bottle. Went down very well with my pasta!
Monday, March 30, 2009 - round and smooth dark cherry and blackberry and spice; remarkably fresh with vibrant acidity; more open on day 2; good risotto/veggies match
Monday, March 30, 2009 - Great nose...get's better over the course of an hour. strawberries, kiwi, kirsh, creme du cassis leading into spice. a little closed.....but the nose is materializing into flavors pretty well...strong tar finish...a bit harsh. Hopefully disapates with time.
Sunday, March 15, 2009 - Violet hued. To my palate, this drinks more like Amarone than a Valpolicella Ripassa designated wine with its thicker, plusher, and almost syrupy mouthfeel/texture, higher level of extract, deeper and more concentrated flavors, and notes of chocolate covered cherries, plums, violets, and just a trace of liqueur.
Sunday, March 15, 2009 - Deep dark red color. Decanted slightly and paired with home made Gnocchi in tomato sauce. Cherry and raisin scents in the nose. Bing cherry and plum flavors. Jammy wine with a nice smooth finish. Two bottles consumed.
Friday, February 13, 2009 - Deep ruby red color. Rich, mouth filling, amarone style, fruit forward, fig and black berry fruit flavors with fine tannins.
Friday, February 06, 2009 - Full bodied, warm, ripe fruit, notes of cherry, silky tannins. A friendly wine and easy to fall in love with. It's rather heavy to drink without food. However, once you get started you may easily consume the entire bottle during a movie. To get even more out of it, combine it with a good pasta.
Tuesday, February 03, 2009 - Dark ruby, cherry and some earth on the nose. Tart cherry and earth notes on the palate, medium to high acidity with firm, grippy tannins. Very good, would likely benefit from some time in the bottle. Would re-buy, but a little steep at ~$21.
Sunday, January 25, 2009 - Aromatic nose of wet earth, blackberry jam and leather. Balanced tannins with blackberry jam tabacco and leather. Very enjoyable.
Wednesday, January 21, 2009 - Dark red. The nose has aromas of volcanic soil, dark fruit, leather, and some alcohol. The palate shows moderate tannin, good acidity, medium to full body. Pleasant finish. Cherry, jammy, good fruit. Not a lot of complexity but really good and fun to drink.
Monday, January 19, 2009 - After decanting for an hour or so, this baby Amarone had some enchanting aromas of dried plum, cherry, hazelnut and even some hints of spice. I love the Ripassos as they give the flavors of an Amarone, but with much softer tannins and are great pairings for easy italian fare, like spaghetti and meatballs which I had with this. Zenato has a winner with this one.
Wednesday, January 07, 2009 - PnP. Really dark reddish violet. Nose of ample blue and black fruits with a bare touch of earth and flowers. Very full bodied with soft tannins, nice acidity and a touch of mineral. Pleasing but simple. Paired with flank steak and Vesuvio potatoes to wonderful effect.
Sunday, November 23, 2008 - decanted for 7 hours. impenetrable ruby colour. coy nose. strawberry peppermint clean finish. definitely not flabby but not as rich as the 05. technically competent but not transcendent
Thursday, November 20, 2008 - Very deep dark red with violet hints. The nose became more restrained after an hour.Concentrated cherries and dark plums on the palate, with a jammy mouthfeeling.Initially quite pleasing, but it did not develop into anything interesting. No secondarys whatsoever.Just this hugh onedimensional sweet fruitbomb that definitely needs food to pair with.

Saturday, January 09, 2010 - Similar to my note from one year ago, but I didn't find it as interesting with some of its youth shed. Still with ample fleshy blue and black fruits and some spice, but lacking the underlying mineral and verve I seem to remember.
